Average MPG calculation is flawed

Average MPG should not be a simple average of the MPG values calculated at each fillup during the time period. It should instead be a simple division of the total miles travelled by the total gallons in the time period.

By way of example, my current fillup history is:

Mileage  Gallons  MPG
1,548  12.143  28.988
1,196  11.129  29.293
   870  13.677  28.442
   481    4.775  27.016
   352  13.028  27.019

I have travelled 1,548 miles on 54.752 gallons. My average MPG should be 28.273.

The site is calculating my average MPG as 28.152 which is a simple average of the MPG readings at each fillup (28.988, 29.293, 28.442, 27.016, and 27.019).

Re: Average MPG calculation is flawed

Dear gbegen,

You are absolutely correct, our site calculates an average of MPG readings instead of average MPG for total miles traveled and gallons used.
We will fix the issue no later than March 11th.

Thank you for this note.
Have a nice day and drive safely!

Re: Average MPG calculation is flawed

Dear gbegen,

We have fixed average MPG calculation process, it will take distance driven during the period and divide it by gallons used.
We will still show average of MPG readings in case any receipts were lost during time period in question.

Thanks again for noticing the problem and reporting it,
Have a great day and drive safely!
